Corona cluster as the sword of Damocles over the Kitzbühel race: “Are only passengers”

After the corona cluster in Jochberg became known with a suspected British virus mutation, KSC President Michael Huber worried about the Hahnenkamm program. Flachau as a substitute for slalom? Last update on Wednesday, January 13th, 2021, 8:28 am

Kitzbühel – Michael Huber is someone who knows an answer to almost every question. At least when it comes to his beloved skiing. But yesterday, in the course of a grueling afternoon, the President of the Kitzbühel Ski Club (KSC) and the head of the Hahnenkamm Race (HKR) was a walking question mark. The reason for this was the media headlines about a corona cluster in Jochberg. A cluster that (also Huber) had been known for a week, but which only started causing a stir yesterday with the suspicion of a British virus mutation. A trouble spot, the immediate effects of which were not foreseeable for the time being and which hovered like a sword of Damocles over the ambitious Kitzbühel plans.

Country calms down, uneasy feeling remains

Even if a spokesman for the state ruled out the cancellation of the Kitzbühel weekend program with two slaloms on Saturday and Sunday, Huber still had a bad feeling. “We have proven often enough that we have the organization, the handling, the slope preparation and sometimes even the weather under control, but we don’t have this virus under control, we are only passengers. And that’s what worries me. “

It was only on Monday that Kitzbühel took over two Lauberhorn races that were canceled due to the corona. Which meant that for the first time in the history of the Hahnenkamm, Gamsstadt would host five races on two weekends: two slaloms this weekend and two downhill runs (Friday, Saturday) and a Super-G (Sunday) next week. A festival of skiing, as all sides agreed.

But now the whole construct is shaking, even though there was a slight all-clear at least in the evening hours: All tested HKR employees were negative ….

In the meantime, rumors had increased that the two Kitzbühel gates could be moved to Flachau for safety reasons. Where yesterday the women delivered a heartbeat finale. The ÖSV did not confirm this.

No spectators allowed at the World Ski Championships

What is certain is that the Alpine Ski World Championships in Cortina d’Ampezzo (February 8 to 21) will be staged without a spectator. Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora announced on Tuesday evening. “The government’s scientific advisory board sees audience participation as too risky.”
