Location: St Johann

St. Johann in Tirol is a market municipality located in the Kitzbühel district of the Austrian state of Tyrol. It lies in the center of the Leukental valley at an altitude of about 660 meters above sea level, surrounded by notable mountain ranges such as the Wilder Kaiser to the northwest, the Kitzbüheler Horn to the south, and the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge to the east35.

The town is a regional transport hub, intersected by several federal highways, and is known for its scenic location in a broad valley basin that protects it from the Alpenföhn storms but results in heavy snowfall in winter. The Großache river flows through the municipality, formed by the confluence of the Kitzbüheler Ache, Reither Ache, and Fieberbrunner Ache, eventually flowing into Bavaria’s Chiemsee as the Tiroler Achen35.

St. Johann in Tirol has a population of approximately 9,891 as of January 2025 and includes several smaller villages and hamlets within its municipal area. Historically, the town’s name derives from a church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, first mentioned in 1150. The area experienced economic growth in the 16th century due to copper and silver mining, and later tourism developed following the arrival of the railway in 1875. It became a market town in 195635.

Today, St. Johann in Tirol is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, skiing, and cross-country skiing, benefiting from its alpine setting and mountain infrastructure like the gondola to Harschbichl near the Kitzbüheler Horn146. The town also offers a vibrant cultural and community life with various events and clubs7.
